Joan's Story

There’s a lot of apprehensions about spine surgery. You hear a lot of horror stories. People need to know that there are wonderful doctors out there and Dr. Ropper is at the top of the list as far as I’m concerned. - Joan B.

I had been experiencing pain in my lower back for about a year prior to my surgery. It started out as an irritant and then gradually progressed to the point where I couldn’t stand or walk for more than maybe 10 minutes without excruciating pain in my lower back.

So I contacted Dr. Ropper and after x-rays and an MRI, we saw that I had a dislocated disc as well as spinal stenosis and other arthritis-related issues. He was extremely responsive, listened very well to my concerns, and explained thoroughly what my options were to alleviate the pain.

Spine Surgery at Baylor Medicine

I was supposed to have the surgery before COVID hit and because of COVID, it had to be postponed. The surgery itself went extremely well. I found Dr. Ropper’s team to be very supportive, very patient-oriented. They listened, they explained and were extremely professional. When I’ve had surgery in the past, I’ve had a lot of nausea and I’m very difficult to awaken. Following this surgery, I was in recovery and immediately awake and lucid. There was no nausea, there was no fuzziness.

The Baylor Medicine team worked like a finely oiled machine. You could just tell that they knew exactly what was expected and knew exactly what they were doing.

Results

I can stand up and walk with no pain. I’m able to walk and the most I've walked is two miles. Of course, that’s not all at one time but I can go shopping and do those kinds of things. I’ve just not experienced any pain since the surgery.
