Letter from Peter G. Traber, M.D.

The entire Baylor College of Medicine community has suffered a profound loss with the death of Dr. Ralph D. Feigin on August 14, 2008, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Dr. Judith Feigin, his three children and their spouses and his six grandchildren.

During his 70 years, he made a lasting impact on the practice of medicine—particularly pediatrics, and an enduring impression on countless lives.

His legacy stems from his unwavering dedication to and accomplishments as a remarkable physician, educator and leader.

His 30 years of service to Baylor College of Medicine as a Distinguished Professor and Chair of Pediatrics elevated our Pediatrics Department to consistently rank among the best in the country. His seven years as President and CEO of Baylor College of Medicine played a critical role in cementing the institution's reputation as one of the nation's premier health science centers. His visionary leadership as physician-in-chief at Texas Children's Hospital has propelled it to a level of excellence that touches the lives of children around the globe.

He was known for his intelligence, his extraordinary memory, his talent, and his tenacious pursuit of excellence. Dr. Feigin was world renowned as an expert diagnostician and consultant in challenging cases. He has been credited for improving the understanding, prevention, and treatment of bacterial meningitis and for reducing its complications rate. In addition, he developed tests for the rapid diagnosis of pediatric infectious diseases.

He was also known for his passion for educating future pediatricians and pediatric specialists. One example of his commitment was his personal involvement in the selection of residents at Texas Children's. Each year, Dr. Feigin personally met with approximately 250 of the prospective residents invited to come to the hospital for interviews.

Ralph Feigin dedicated his career to the well being of future generations. We are deeply indebted to him and we will best honor him by continuing to strive for better health for all children.
