Mission Statement
Molecular and cellular biology is a discipline in which the principles of molecular biology are integrated within the framework of modern structural biology. The research advances in cell biology have paralleled the emphasis and results of contemporary technology. These advances continue to provide a balanced approach to the understanding of structure-function relationships in both normal and disease states.
Education & Training Programs
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology provides training and research opportunities to medical, graduate and postdoctoral students. The Department offers a strong graduate program leading the Ph.D. degree and participates in Baylor's M.D./Ph.D. Program leading to degrees of M.D. and Ph.D. The Graduate Program is designed to prepare students for independent and competitive careers in research and teaching.
The Division of Anatomical Sciences within the Department is responsible for the core medical curriculum courses in Gross Anatomy & Embryology and Cell Biology & Histology. The Departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Molecular Physiology & Biophysics, and Neurology combine resources to offer expertise in Neuroscience. The Department also offers graduate-level Gross Anatomy courses for the Nurse Anesthesia, Physician Assistant, and other Allied Health programs.
Current Research
Research in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology is interdisciplinary with emphasis on the cellular and molecular regulation of structural and functional aspects of normal and abnormal growth and differentiation. Examples of current research programs include investigatations into the structure of genes and chromatin, the mechanisms and regulation of transcription processing of mRNA and translation, genetic engineering, the biochemistry and regulation of the cytoskeleton, mitotic apparatus, and cell motility.
